I love food, but Latin/Hispanic cuisine high on the list. It is not always easy to find the most authentic restaurants in town, but I’m proud to showcase these fine establishments.
Abuelita’s
I can’t even with this place. Authentically charming and wonderfully delcious, Abuelita’s is just as its name conveys…home with Grandma. Specializing in Guisos (stew) do yourself a flavor and order the Tinga de Pollo, que rico!!!
Don’t Look Back
My dear friend Nate Guiterrez started this little taco truck years ago and now he has not one, but two locations! I love the shrimp tacos and carnitas. They have a good tequila selection as well. A great place for a great hang with pool tables and lounge area perfect for birthdays and work events.
Maya
If you are looking for something a bit more upscale and love Mezcal as much as I do, then Maya is the place for you. Colombian Chef, Maria Oseguera and husband, Michael (Mexico) brings vibrant presentations and delicious native flavors to the table. Don’t let their nestled city restaurant get lost on your list!
Tio Pablos
This is another great hangout with good tequila selections. I love the al Pastor tacos here as well as their elote is soooo yum. This place is a staple on my list of great taquerias.
Restaurant Adarra
If ever there was a restaurant that had me at hello it would be Adarra. I cannot tell you how every bite has a story to tell. The flavors are daring and beautifully presented. Chef Randall Doetzer kills it as Northern Spanish cuisine and I promise you will not go home disappointed. Killer cocktails, a wonderfully friendly staff, and a perfect restaurant to say I love you.
Kuba Kuba and Kuba Dos
When a great person owns a great restaurant, there is no denying its power. For 22 years, Cuban born owner, Manny Mendez has been gracing RVA with his delightful flavors and charming eat-in bodega. When I want to feel my Latin, I come here, and for the love of Dios, por favor, get the Tres Leches cake.
Mas
When I lived in NY, I had the wide landscape of many flavors from many countries. One of my favorites was the tapas at 1492 (RIP) and I didn’t think I’d have tapas again until my visit to Spain. You may have a quicker jaunt to Charlottesville, but I assure you Mas will entice and satisfy your need for casual Spanish tapas in an inviting atmosphere.
Bocata Latin Grill
Ready to make your tastebuds happy? This authentically Venezuelan restaurant brings delicious arepas and the crave worthy Patacón is spot on. A great place for lunch!
El Pope
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all If you’re looking for the real deal in Central American cuisine, look no further. Specializing in such Salvadorian delights as pupusa and classic dishes, El Pope will satisfy your cravings! difference.
La Bodega
I fell in love with La Bodega from that first empanada bite. The pernil put me over the edge! If you want the soul of Latin America in your mouth, go here. The very large plates do not disappoint and it reminds me of sitting around the kitchen table with family enjoying a home cooked meal.
